What’s at stake
El-Sayed’s victory keeps the seat held by Peters in Democratic hands. Peters is retiring after two terms, according to AP.
Democrats entered the election needing a net gain of four seats to retake the Senate. Republicans had hoped winning Michigan’s open Democratic seat would help block that path, according to AP’s election guide published by Michigan Public.
El-Sayed defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the August Democratic primary. Rogers previously ran for Michigan’s other Senate seat in 2024, narrowly losing to Democrat Elissa Slotkin, AP reported.
The candidates
El-Sayed, a former Wayne County Health Department director, campaigned on Medicare for All and lowering living costs, including fuel prices, according to WILX.
Rogers, a former Michigan congressman, focused on national security, immigration and inflation. He criticized El-Sayed’s health care proposal as socialized medicine, WILX reported.
