A 23-year-old Canton Township man pleaded guilty Wednesday, Aug. 5, to assault with intent to murder after stabbing his mother, brother and sister at a home on Parklawn Drive last October.

Derek Attee Alesmaily entered the plea in Wayne County's Third Circuit Court before Judge Miller, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office weekly case update. Sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 9 a.m.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed 10 remaining charges, including two additional counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, three counts of felonious assault and two counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer, ClickOnDetroit reported.

Canton Township police responded around 3:40 p.m. on Oct. 14, 2025, to a home in the 3700 block of Parklawn Drive. Officers found three victims with multiple stab wounds: Alesmaily's 42-year-old mother, his 21-year-old brother, both of Canton Township, and his 22-year-old sister, of Dearborn. All three were taken to a Metro Detroit hospital in serious but stable condition.

Investigators said Alesmaily stabbed the victims multiple times before fleeing. He was arrested a short time later.

Alesmaily was charged as a second-offense habitual offender, with a bond set at $3 million cash. Court records show prior convictions for failing to stop at the scene of an accident and bank robbery. He had been released on parole just months before the stabbing.

Canton murder case heads to October trial

The same prosecutor's update confirms that Devereaux Christopher Johnson, 49, of Canton, has been found competent to stand trial for the Aug. 10, 2024, fatal shooting of Nathan Morris, 35, an engineer and father of two young daughters.

Johnson faces first-degree premeditated murder, firearms possession by a felon and two counts of felony firearm. His trial is set for Oct. 15.

Morris was shot during a dispute that, according to Hometown Life, may have stemmed from his daughter playing with mulch near Johnson's home in the 200 block of Cornell Street. A police officer testified at a July 2025 preliminary exam that Morris was unarmed.

Johnson's case stalled for months over competency disputes. He has been represented by at least five attorneys. At a May 1 hearing, Johnson told the court he wanted to move forward: "I feel that my constitutional rights to a speedy trial are being violated because it's been over 21 months and counting since I was arrested and charged with first-degree murder," he said.

The Detroit News reported Aug. 5 that Johnson was found competent, clearing the way for the October trial date.

Stalker of Plymouth commissioner heads to sentencing

Christopher Dean Baldwin, 42, of Jackson, pleaded no contest June 4 to one count of aggravated stalking of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and her wife, Plymouth City Commissioner Alanna Maguire.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Baldwin in March 2025. He was later found incompetent and placed in a secure facility under the Wayne County Probate Division. After regaining competence, the criminal case was reinstated.

Baldwin faces sentencing Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. before Judge Miller.
