Elephant Ear Books has moved into a bigger storefront in downtown Plymouth, gaining roughly 50% more retail space less than two years after opening.

Owner Melissa Schabel relocated the independent bookstore to 445 S. Harvey St., Suite 19, in October, just four doors down from its original location, according to the Plymouth Downtown Development Authority. The new space gives Schabel room to host small events alongside the store’s selection of new books for readers of all ages.

Schabel opened Elephant Ear Books in November 2024. The DDA said the move was made to accommodate the store’s growth.

In a store announcement reposted Oct. 20 by the community Instagram account plymouthmichigan, the bookstore said its signs had not yet been moved.

“We are live in the new space!” the store’s message read. “Just 4 doors down from the old location, and our signs have not yet been moved. We hope you can find us.”

The store also announced it had added a texting option for customers who prefer not to call. “Good news for fellow telephobes!” the message said. “You can now text us as well as email or call.”

Elephant Ear Books sells new books across all genres and takes special orders, according to the bookstore’s website. Customers can also order online through Bookshop.org, with purchases benefiting the store.

The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the new Harvey Street address.
