The LIV Golf Team Championship, carrying a $40 million purse, was scheduled to bring thousands of fans to The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort Aug. 27-30.
Instead, the event has been canceled as LIV Golf navigates a major funding transition.
LIV Golf confirmed Tuesday, Aug. 18, that the Aramco LIV Golf Michigan event will not take place. The cancellation comes after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced earlier in 2026 that it would stop funding LIV at the end of the season.
No infrastructure buildout had started at The Cardinal, Golf Channel reported. No grandstands. No VIP hospitality tents. No concession areas.
"By concluding the season now, we can put our full resources behind what comes next and maintain the operational rigor this transition demands," LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil said in a statement.
The league pivoted its season finale to Indianapolis, where LIV Golf Indianapolis runs Aug. 20-23 at The Club at Chatham Hills. Michigan's cancellation was the second LIV event scrapped in 2026; New Orleans lost its stop earlier in the season.
Ticket holders will get refunds
LIV Golf said it will issue refunds to all ticket buyers and communicate directly with affected fans. The league continued selling tickets until shortly before the cancellation. The total number of tickets sold has not been disclosed.
Saint John's Resort reportedly paid seven-figure hosting fee
The resort is believed to have paid a seven-figure hosting fee to LIV Golf to secure the 2026 event, according to the Detroit News.
Kevin Doyle, COO of the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, which oversees the resort, said the organization was "disappointed" but remains "committed to making Saint John's Resort a place where the Michigan community comes to expect memorable, one-of-a-kind golf and resort experiences."
2025 event drew nearly 40,000 fans
The 2025 LIV Golf Team Championship at The Cardinal drew nearly 40,000 fans over three days and ended with Jon Rahm's team beating Bryson DeChambeau's squad in a two-hole sudden-death playoff.
Plymouth Township Police Chief James Knittel told the Board of Trustees at its Aug. 26, 2025, meeting that "nearly 40,000 people attended over the three days, some who traveled from across the country and world."
The township deployed more than 60 police officers and 20 fire/EMS personnel for the event, with LIV reimbursing public safety costs. LIV announced in December 2025 that it would return to Plymouth Township in 2026, promising to make the event "bigger and better."
What comes next
O'Neil said LIV has secured a new lead investor who signed a term sheet, though the investor's identity has not been disclosed. Bloomberg reported that London-based private equity firm BC Partners is considering a loan to the league.
LIV plans a reduced 10-event schedule in 2027. No future Plymouth Township event has been announced.
