Michigan State Police closed all southbound lanes of M-39, the Southfield Freeway, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, after a ShotSpotter activation reported a possible shooting near the I-96 interchange in Detroit.

Troopers were notified at approximately 11:39 a.m. and responded to the area, according to MSP's Second District on X. The agency said a ShotSpotter activation was reported in the area but that a freeway shooting had not been confirmed.

Southbound M-39 was closed from Plymouth Road to Joy Road while troopers searched the freeway for possible shell casings and other evidence, WDIV reported. The eastbound and westbound ramps from M-39 to I-96 were also closed during the investigation.

The freeway reopened at around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to WWJ Newsradio.

In a later update, Michigan State Police said the freeway was back open and that there was “no additional information at this time.” As of MSP’s latest public update, the agency had not confirmed that a freeway shooting occurred.
