The Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education called a special closed session for Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. to discuss an undisclosed attorney-client privilege matter.
The meeting agenda lists a single item: a closed session under Section 8(1)(h) of Michigan's Open Meetings Act to consider attorney-client privilege documents exempt from disclosure under the state's Freedom of Information Act.
No public action items are listed after the closed session. The agenda calls only for adjournment.
The special meeting is scheduled for one hour before the board's regular 7 p.m. meeting that evening.
A pattern of closed sessions
The Aug. 25 session marks at least the sixth special closed meeting since October 2024 in which the board cited the attorney-client privilege exemption.
Prior sessions took place Oct. 22, 2024; Sept. 23, 2025; Nov. 11, 2025; Nov. 25, 2025; and April 28, 2026.
The April 28 session ran from 8:29 p.m. to 10:10 p.m. Collins and Blaha attorney Dave Comsa attended that meeting alongside EPC Managing Partners Daniel Sheehy, Merry Kelly and Katy Rose, according to meeting minutes.
The public records reviewed do not explain EPC Managing Partners' role in that session.
Collins and Blaha Law Firm was reappointed unanimously as the district's general counsel at the July 9 organizational meeting.
The Aug. 25 closed session cites attorney-client privilege, a different legal basis from the Aug. 4 closed session used for negotiations updates on the teacher contract, which we reported on Aug. 24.
Who's at the table
The board's current officers are President Anupam Chugh Sidhu, Vice President Jennifer Vos, Secretary Judy Westra and Treasurer Patrick Kehoe.
Joe Tollefson, appointed in July to fill the seat vacated by Cheryl Picard's resignation effective June 11, is serving through Dec. 31, 2026.
The district has not disclosed the legal issue prompting the Aug. 25 closed session.
Any board action requiring a formal decision would need to be taken in open session.
