A downtown Plymouth pizzeria has landed on the national map.
Pizza e Vino, at 849 Penniman Ave., was named one of 27 standout pizzerias across 20 states in a USA Today Network guide published Friday, Aug. 21. Detroit Free Press food writer Lyndsay Green selected the restaurant for the nationwide list, which spans Neapolitan, Detroit-style, Sicilian, New York-style, sourdough and wood-fired pies.
Green called Pizza e Vino the only VPN-certified restaurant in metro Detroit. VPN stands for Verace Pizza Napoletana, an Italian certification that requires 00 flour, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and a certified oven that bakes hand-stretched dough in under 90 seconds.
"There's just one restaurant in metro Detroit that is VPN certified … and that is Pizza e Vino in Plymouth," Green wrote. "Try pizzas with minimal toppings, such as soppressata and kalamata olives, pepperoni or the simplest of all, fior di latte and basil for a classic Margherita D.O.P."
The Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce lists Pizza e Vino as Michigan's first restaurant to earn the VPN designation. The restaurant is also an active member of VPN Americas, the official AVPN delegation for the United States, Canada and Mexico, according to the organization's membership directory.
The national recognition follows a separate USA Today Network Midwest roundup published Aug. 14, which named Pizza e Vino one of five top pizza picks in the region.
Pizza e Vino is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday from 4 to 11 p.m., Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. The restaurant is closed Mondays. Reservations and more information are available at pizzaevinoplymouth.com or by calling 734-254-0275.
