Local businesses, families, and civic organizations now have a formal path to fund improvements in Plymouth's parks.
The Plymouth City Commission approved a new Park Sponsorship Program on Monday, July 20, according to the city's official newsletter published July 26. The program creates a framework for private investment in public park amenities, improvements, and what the city described as long-term enhancements.
Eligible sponsors include individuals, families, businesses, civic organizations, and philanthropic partners.
The city has not yet released details on sponsorship tiers, minimum contribution amounts, which parks are eligible, or how to apply. The newsletter said more information will be posted to plymouthmi.gov in the coming weeks but did not give a specific date.
What's at stake
Plymouth maintains several well-used public parks within its compact downtown footprint, including Kellogg Park at the center of the city's Main Street district. Kellogg Park hosts the weekly Music in the Air summer concert series and Art in the Park, which the Downtown Development Authority describes as the second-largest art fair in Michigan. DDA Director Sam Plymale's office manages programming in the park throughout the year.
The city's seven-member Commission holds final authority over large park improvement projects, additional funding, and land acquisitions, according to the city's joint parks and recreation master plan. The sponsorship program would add a new revenue stream alongside the general fund and earned revenue that have historically supported the parks system in the city of roughly 9,000 residents.
No vote count from the July 20 meeting has been published, and no individual commissioner or city official has been quoted on the program's goals or scope.
