The City of Plymouth and Plymouth Township each earned a B+ for safety in a new ranking of metro Detroit suburbs, while Canton Township landed a B-.

Data website Niche released its 2026 Crime and Safety grades for more than 40 communities in the Detroit area, Patch reported Wednesday, Sept. 9. Every suburb in the report scored B- or higher.

The grades draw on FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) health data and resident survey responses collected by Niche.

How Niche calculates the grades

Resident surveys carry the most weight, accounting for 37.5% of a community's score, according to Niche's methodology page. FBI crime categories make up 52.5%, split among assault rate at 15%, robbery rate at 15%, murder rate at 10%, burglary rate at 5%, vehicle theft rate at 5% and larceny rate at 2.5%.

CDC data fills the remaining 10%, covering drug-related deaths, excessive drinking, firearm-related deaths and premature death rates at 2.5% each.

Niche weights the most recent year of FBI data at 65%, the prior year at 25% and the year before that at 10% to smooth out outlier years.

Where Plymouth and Canton land

Plymouth and Plymouth Township share the B+ tier with communities including Berkley and Huntington Woods. Canton Township sits in the B- tier alongside Farmington Hills and Sterling Heights.

Neighboring Northville earned an A-. Northville Township, Novi, Birmingham and Troy each received a B.

What the grades don't show

The specific crime figures behind each community's grade, such as assault or burglary rates per capita, were not included in the Patch report or the available Niche data.

Plymouth Township Police Chief James Knittel and Canton Township Interim Police Chief Joseph Bialy had not publicly commented on the grades as of Thursday, Sept. 10. Residents can view their community's full safety profile, including survey results and underlying data, at niche.com.
