Canton Township Clerk Michael Siegrist says local election officials are “planning for every outcome” ahead of the Nov. 3 general election, Votebeat reported in an Oct. 28 story published by Bridge Michigan.
Siegrist also leads the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks. State officials told the publication they had expanded system capacity and monitoring after an August slowdown.
The Qualified Voter File is Michigan’s statewide voter-registration database. During the Aug. 4 primary, a technical problem slowed registrations and absentee-ballot processing, MLive reported. The publication reported that the problem was resolved that evening.
What Canton voters need to know
Canton Township’s general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. According to Canton’s elections page, early voting at Summit on the Park, 46000 Summit Parkway, continues through Nov. 1.
Hours through Oct. 29 are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Extended hours of 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. run Oct. 30 through Nov. 1.
Residents can register to vote in person at the Clerk’s Office, 1150 S. Canton Center Road, through 8 p.m. on Election Day. Proof of residency is required for in-person registration during the final 14 days before the election.
Canton says some voters’ polling locations have changed. Residents should verify their assigned location at Michigan.gov/Vote. Election Day polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to state guidance.
Statewide, more than 1.39 million voters had already cast ballots as of Oct. 27, an 18.8% turnout rate among active registered voters, according to the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. That included 1,176,375 returned absentee ballots and 215,795 early in-person votes. It is the first midterm general election with early in-person voting available to every Michigan voter.
Most absentee ballots must reach clerks by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. The Secretary of State’s office advised voters to use a local drop box or hand-deliver ballots rather than rely on the mail this close to Election Day.
Canton’s Clerk’s Office can be reached at 734-394-5120.
