Canton families can climb aboard fire trucks, watch a live electrical safety demonstration and grab free popcorn at the Canton Fire Department's annual open house Saturday, Oct. 10.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 1100 S. Canton Center Road, according to the Canton Michigan Fire Department’s announcement.

Activities include a scavenger hunt, tours of the fire safety house, an up-close look at fire trucks, fire prevention talks and hands-on activities. A live DTE Arcs & Sparks demonstration will teach electrical safety. Popcorn and water will be provided courtesy of Absopure.

Participants who complete and submit the scavenger hunt can enter for a chance to win a Toarmina’s lunch with the firefighters and a fire truck ride.

Parking near the station is limited. Additional parking is available in Heritage Park, behind the station.

The open house caps National Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 4–10. The 2026 national theme centers on safe charging practices for devices and batteries.

Residents with questions can call the Canton Fire Department at 734-394-5455.

Safety plan needs resident input by Oct. 26

Canton Township is also asking residents to weigh in on a plan that would guide safety improvements at the township's highest-priority streets and intersections.

The draft Transportation Safety Action Plan is open for public review, with comments due by Monday, Oct. 26. The plan was developed using a Safe Streets for All grant awarded to Canton by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2025.

According to the township's project page, the plan identifies streets and intersections with the greatest need for safety improvements and develops concepts for redesigning those locations. It will also set Canton's goals for reducing traffic deaths and injuries and position the township to compete for additional federal safety funding.

Canton Township urged residents who walk, bike or drive through the community to submit feedback, saying the final plan should reflect daily experiences and local priorities. Comments can be submitted through the township's project page at cantonmi.gov/1531.

Canton Township Supervisor Anne Marie Graham-Hudak's October FOCUS newsletter, which announced both items, is available online.
