Canton residents can drop off old paint, motor oil, batteries and other toxic household waste for free on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the township's annual Hazardous Waste Round-up.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Canton's Division of Public Works Building, 4847 Sheldon Rd. Bring a valid ID — the township restricts the event to Canton residents only.
Lines will be long.
Canton Township calls it a high-volume event in its civic alert and advises arriving with patience.
What's accepted
The township confirms motor oil, home electronics, latex paint, batteries and antifreeze are among the items accepted. A full list of accepted and prohibited items is posted at cantonmi.gov/248. These are materials too toxic, flammable or corrosive for regular trash.
Can't make Sept. 12?
Canton residents have other options. A Canton Clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 39000 Van Born Rd., where limited hazardous waste is accepted alongside regular bulk items.
Year-round, ERG Environmental Services at 1340 Merriman Rd. in Livonia accepts hazardous waste for $0.75 per pound, with a $20 minimum fee. ERG can be reached at 734-437-9650.
