Canton kids heading back to school this fall will get a boost from their neighbors, thanks to a supply drive organized by the township's Youth Service Squad.
The drive, which runs Thursday, July 30 through Thursday, August 20, collects crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, pencil sharpeners, two-pocket folders, highlighters, child-sized scissors and spiral notebooks. Monetary donations are also accepted at the collection table events.
The Youth Service Squad operates under the B.L.O.C.K. Youth & Teen Center, Canton's after-school program for teens ages 11 to 17. B.L.O.C.K., Building Leaders Out of Canton's Kids, has run youth development programming out of its 3,000-square-foot facility since 2001, according to Canton Township's website.
The center targets at-risk youth identified by the Canton Public Safety Department, offering free admission and transportation to qualifying participants.
Where to donate
Residents have three drop-off options, according to the Canton Township announcement:
- Canton Farmers Market — Sunday, August 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Preservation Park, 500 N. Ridge Road. Look for the collection table.
- Thursday Night LIVE concert — Thursday, August 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Park, 1180 S. Canton Center Road. A collection table will be set up during the free concert.
- Canton Administration Building — Third floor donation box, 1150 S. Canton Center Road. Open through Thursday, August 20.

The Canton Public Library also lists the Youth Service Squad among several organizations running school supply drives this summer, alongside Plymouth Community United Way and St. Thomas a'Becket Catholic Church.
