The $40 million LIV Golf Team Championship at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth Township remains officially on the schedule for Aug. 27-30, even as multiple national outlets reported on Tuesday, July 28, that a cancellation announcement was imminent.

Sources confirmed to WDIV Local 4 that LIV Golf will not make a final go/no-go decision on the Plymouth Township event until after its New Jersey stop at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster wraps up Sunday, Aug. 9. Tickets for the four-day Plymouth event remain on sale online, starting at $26.

The timeline gives Plymouth Township residents a concrete answer: expect word on the tournament's fate by the second week of August.

A week of whiplash

As we reported July 25, Cleeks GC captain Martin Kaymer told U.K.-based Today's Golfer on Thursday, July 23, that the Michigan event was "highly unlikely" after a captains' meeting with LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil. Kaymer pegged the odds at roughly 5%.

Then on Tuesday, July 28, Golf Channel, Front Office Sports, and other national outlets reported that an official cancellation announcement was expected Wednesday. That announcement never came.

A league source told Golf.com that LIV would not make a final call until after Bedminster concludes, reconciling the "still on" status with the widespread cancellation reports.

No visible buildout

The uncertainty is visible on the ground. A Detroit News reporter who visited The Cardinal on July 23 found zero infrastructure: no hospitality suites on the 18th hole, no stage for post-round concerts, no player walking bridge across the signature pond, and no signage of any kind. That was five weeks before the scheduled start.

Kevin Doyle, COO of the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, which oversees The Cardinal, told the Detroit News at the time: "Nothing new right now. LIV's planning is ongoing and the Saint John's team continues to work closely with them on it."

What's at stake locally

The 2025 LIV event at The Cardinal drew nearly 40,000 fans over three days, according to Plymouth Township Police Chief Knittel's report to the Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025. The township deployed more than 60 police officers and was fully reimbursed for public safety costs.

The 2026 event was announced in December 2025 with a $40 million purse, down from $50 million in 2025. LIV already canceled its inaugural New Orleans event in late June, making the Michigan stop the potential second scrapped tournament of the season. Multiple contractors told golf media outlet Flushing It that their travel arrangements for the Michigan event had been canceled and that money is owed.

Behind it all: Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced in April 2026 it would stop bankrolling LIV Golf after this season. CEO Scott O'Neil faces a Tuesday, Sept. 1, deadline to secure roughly $350 million in new investor funding.

If the Michigan event is canceled, LIV's 2026 season would end with just two remaining stops: Bedminster (Aug. 6-9) and Indianapolis (Aug. 20-23).
