Downtown Plymouth has a new coffee shop at the corner of Ann Arbor Trail and Harvey Street, and its parent company says it comes with something no other local TV newsroom in the country has tried: a permanent café that doubles as a working broadcast outpost.

Fourgrounds, operated by WDIV Local 4 News, opened to the public on Wednesday, July 22, at 995 W. Ann Arbor Trail. The concept pairs locally roasted coffee from Detroit-based Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co. with a staffed satellite newsroom where Local 4 reporters work, take story tips, and hold community conversations.

Graham Media Group, WDIV's parent company, said in a press release that no other local TV newsroom in the country operates a permanent café in a neighborhood business district.

"Journalism only works if a community trusts you enough to hand you their stories," Stephanie Slagle, vice president and general manager of WDIV Local 4, said in the announcement. "Fourgrounds gives our reporters and anchors a place to earn that trust in person."

The café features a community board where neighbors can post local happenings, a live news ticker, and scheduled "Coffee with the Newsroom" events where residents can sit with Local 4 journalists. A Local 4 community reporter named Kyla is assigned to cover Plymouth from the shop, according to the Fourgrounds website.

Fourgrounds is open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number is 734-335-4050. Online ordering is listed as coming soon on the café's website; the shop is walk-in only for now.

The Plymouth Downtown Development Authority announced the opening on Tuesday, July 21, one day before the public grand opening.

WDIV, Detroit's NBC affiliate, said Fourgrounds will serve residents across Plymouth, Canton, Northville, Novi, Livonia, and surrounding Western Wayne County communities. The station described the space as permanent rather than a pop-up or limited-run event.
