Salvatore Camalo birdied the first playoff hole Tuesday, July 28, to win the 15-and-under division at the Golf Association of Michigan Boys' Championship at Polo Fields Golf & Country Club in Ann Arbor.

Camalo, a Plymouth resident and rising sophomore on the Detroit Catholic Central varsity golf roster, finished the 36-hole stroke play event tied with Grand Rapids' Fitz Vanderson at 1-under-par 143. The playoff birdie gave Camalo the title in the third edition of the summer championship, which the GAM schedules opposite the high school golf season.

It was his first GAM title.

"I haven't played too good this year, so it's a big, big confidence boost for me," Camalo told GolfBlogger.com after the round.

The two-day tournament, played Monday, July 27, through Tuesday, July 28, crowns champions in both the 15-and-under and overall divisions. Grand Rapids' Tommy Preston took the overall title with an 11-under-par 133, adding a second GAM win of the 2026 season. Defending champion JP LeVan finished runner-up to Preston, according to the Golf Association of Michigan's official Instagram post announcing results.

Camalo is listed as a freshman (class of 2029) on the Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks varsity golf roster, placing him between his freshman and sophomore years this summer. DCC draws students from across metro Detroit, and Camalo's hometown is Plymouth.

The GAM's tournament history page also lists a Matt Camalo of Plymouth as a past GAM event winner in 2015, though the relationship between the two golfers has not been confirmed.

DCC's varsity golf season begins this fall, where Camalo will look to carry the momentum from his first state-level championship into high school competition.
