A free art exhibit featuring 17 women painters opened Tuesday, July 28, at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton, with a public reception where visitors can meet the artists on Thursday, July 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.
"Voices in Color," presented by the Birmingham Society of Women Painters, runs through Sunday, August 23. The show explores how color conveys personal history, cultural identity, resilience and joy, according to Canton Township's announcement.
Admission is free.
The BSWP, founded in 1944, started as a group providing instruction and workspace for women painters. The organization helped establish the Bloomfield Art Association in 1957, which later contributed to the creation of the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. Members are selected through nomination and portfolio review and work in watercolor, oil, acrylic and mixed media, according to the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center.
The 17 exhibiting artists are Barbara Baker, Carol Chambers, Betsy Coats, Jan Filarski, Sherry Foster, Cheryl Haithco, Susan Hassenrik, Laura Whitesides Host, Lesley Kutinsky, Alessandra Lipman, Judi Mindell, Meike Rapp-Ullmann, Susan Shlom, Linda Sterns, Vasu Tolia, Helen Vlasic and Paula Zaks.
Rapp-Ullmann also has a solo show, "Blink," scheduled at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center from September 25 through October 29.
The exhibit is free during regular gallery hours: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. The gallery is also open during all public performances at the theater, or by appointment by emailing Village Theater gallery coordinator Jennifer Collins at [email protected].
