A 159,000-square-foot Meijer supercenter opens Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 48025 Five Mile Road in Plymouth Township, giving the area its first Meijer location.

The store is Meijer's 130th in Michigan. It sits on a stretch of Five Mile Road just west of Beck Road, on land that was part of the former Detroit House of Corrections property. No taxes had been collected on the parcel for more than 94 years before Meijer agreed to redevelop it, MITC consultant Dr. James Harless told the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees at a March 2024 meeting.

The township board approved a $12.89 million brownfield plan amendment for environmental cleanup, public infrastructure and site preparation tied to the project.

Inside, the supercenter carries fresh produce, bakery, meat, seafood and deli departments, plus a floral area, garden center, clothing and home goods, Patch reported. A full-service pharmacy with a drive-through window, health and beauty section, pet department, electronics, toys and sporting goods round out the floor.

Digital tools include the mPerks loyalty program, Shop & Scan self-checkout, home delivery and curbside pickup, according to a Meijer newsroom release. The mPerks program lets shoppers earn up to $1 off per gallon at the Meijer Express fuel station next door, which opened Sept. 2.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The pharmacy closes earlier: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"We're deeply invested in this area and look forward to strengthening existing partnerships and creating new ones here with local organizations," Maureen Mitchell, Meijer's vice president of the Southeast Michigan region, said in a statement.

Meijer employs more than 40,000 people statewide and has been hiring hourly, part-time and full-time workers for the new Plymouth Township location. The company said job seekers can apply through its careers page.

Meijer said its southeast Michigan community partnerships include Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.
