Students in Plymouth-Canton's High School Virtual Academy will no longer log in to daily live Zoom sessions when the 2026-27 school year begins. Instead, they'll complete coursework on their own schedules through a new partnership with Subject.com, an asynchronous online learning platform.
The district announced the switch Thursday, July 23, saying the move gives virtual students more flexibility while keeping them connected to certified teachers and weekly mentor check-ins.
"This new platform gives students greater flexibility and ownership of their learning while ensuring they continue to receive the individualized support, teacher connections, and accountability they need to be successful," Amanda Pelukas, P-CCS High School Virtual Academy coordinator, said in the district's announcement.
What changes for students
Under the old model, Virtual Academy students followed a set daily Zoom schedule. The new Subject.com platform lets them work through lessons at any hour and spend extra time on difficult material or move ahead when they're ready.
Each course is still led by a certified teacher who monitors progress, provides feedback, and schedules one-on-one meetings as needed, according to the district. Students will also follow pacing guides and participate in weekly mentor check-ins to stay on track.
New tools built into the platform include text-to-speech, translation support, interactive study resources, real-time progress monitoring with immediate feedback on assignments, and 24/7 on-demand tutoring.
The platform also tailors lesson examples to a student's stated interests while staying aligned with Michigan academic standards, the district said.
Who's affected
The Virtual Academy serves P-CCS high schoolers who earn their diplomas remotely. Students remain assigned to their home high school, Canton, Plymouth, or Salem, and graduate with that school's diploma, according to the district's 2025-26 school profile. The district does not publish a standalone enrollment count for the Virtual Academy.

All Subject.com teachers of record are state-certified and licensed in the subjects they teach, matched to each state's credentialing requirements, according to the company's website. The district has not specified whether P-CCS students' teachers will hold Michigan credentials specifically.
