Plymouth High School junior Lauren Abuel shot a school-record 69 at the MHSAA Division 1 regional golf tournament Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to Social House News. She then won a three-hole playoff to claim medalist honors.
Abuel's record-setting round at Salem Hills Golf Course in Northville Township earned her an individual berth in the state finals, Social House News reported. She defeated Northville's Cam Baker in the playoff to win the Regional 3 title.
The performance puts Abuel in position to give Plymouth back-to-back individual state champions. Annie Flavin won the Division 1 title in 2025 at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University, shooting a 148 over two rounds to win by four strokes.
After winning that title, Flavin told Social House News in October 2025, "I started crying as I walked off the 18th green. It was mixed emotions, really, knowing it was the last time I'd play high school [golf], and seeing my parents (Barry and Kristy) and coaches (Kevin Niemiec and John Tatti) who have supported me every step of the way."
Flavin was the third Wildcat to claim an individual state golf championship in 13 years, following Kelsey Murphy in 2012 and Bridget Boczar in 2021. Abuel could make it four.
Plymouth finished fourth in the 14-team regional field with a team score of 355, Social House News reported. Sophia Sarver shot an 82, Alyssa Steinhauer a 96, Annabelle Thai a 108 and Avery Ouimet a 114. The team score was not low enough to qualify for the state meet as a team.
Northville won the regional at 290, led by McKenzie Stevens' 70. Brighton (336) and Novi (339) also qualified as teams.
Two other area golfers earned individual state finals berths. Salem's Brooke Resovsky shot a 78, and White Lake Lakeland's Abigail Ngo carded a 77. Salem placed fifth overall, with Allison Mayer adding a 93. Canton finished 12th, led by sophomore Genevieve Kline's 94.
The Division 1 state finals are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, at Bedford Valley Golf Course, according to MHSAA’s tournament schedule.
