Plymouth seniors get fraud, dementia talks this fall

Plymouth Township Police Chief James H. Knittel Jr. and a Homeland Security detective will lead a senior fraud workshop Nov. 19 at the Plymouth Community Council on Aging.

The event is part of a two-month fall schedule outlined in the nonprofit's October Senior Connections newsletter. More than a dozen programs run through November at the Friendship Station Senior Center, 42375 Schoolcraft, spanning health talks, legal seminars, fitness classes, bingo and a holiday luncheon.

The fraud and identity theft presentation is set for Thursday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. Knittel and Homeland Security Investigations Task Force Officer Detective Jackson Chalmers will co-present. The two led a similar session Aug. 6 at the same venue. Refreshments will be provided. Residents can RSVP at 734-354-3222.

Other highlights start in October. Richard Mabe, regional director of resident care at Waltonwood Carriage Park, will lead a dementia presentation Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. covering how dementia affects the brain and the challenges caregivers face.

Attorney Gary Allen has two dates on the calendar. He will discuss wills, trusts and ladybird deeds Monday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m., then return Thursday, Nov. 12, at 1:30 p.m. for a session on powers of attorney, deeds, mortgages and eliminating capital gains taxes.

The PCCA's annual members meeting is Friday, Oct. 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. and is open to members only. Members can bring questions for the board of directors, led by President Kathy Turnquist.

The fall calendar also marks a transition. Longtime director Bobbie Pummill announced plans to retire at the end of September after 20 years. "It has been a privilege working with you as the Director of the Plymouth Community Council On Aging for the past 20 years," Pummill wrote in the organization's August newsletter. The October issue does not name a successor.

Weekly fitness classes continue through October, including Strength and Stretch on Mondays at 10 a.m. and Toning With Tunes on Wednesdays at 9:45 a.m. Drop-in fees are $7 for members and $9 for non-members.

The season wraps with the annual holiday luncheon Friday, Nov. 20, at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 for members and $23 for non-members. The menu features turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, corn, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, rolls and a beverage. PCCA membership costs $30 for an individual and $50 for a couple. The new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
