Plymouth Township and Canton Township drivers heading east on I-94 toward Detroit or the airport are now driving on the westbound side of the freeway after MDOT shifted all eastbound traffic east of I-275 there Friday, July 31.
The Michigan Department of Transportation moved eastbound I-94 traffic, separated by a barrier wall, onto the westbound lanes as crews rebuild the eastbound side over the next year.
The shift is part of MDOT's $353 million Restore 94 Project, which is reconstructing 12.7 miles of I-94 between I-275 and Michigan Avenue.
MDOT crews began the transition at 6 a.m. Friday and completed it that day, closing entrance and exit ramps between Wayne Road and Schaefer Road at various times as pavement markings were added. MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said drivers heading to Detroit Metro Airport should use I-275 south to Eureka Road while the new configuration is in effect.
Three ramps closed through mid-2027
Now that the shift is complete, three ramps that Plymouth and Canton residents rely on will stay closed until mid-2027:
- Southbound Wayne Road to eastbound I-94 — Detour: westbound I-94 to Haggerty Road to eastbound I-94
- Southbound Merriman Road to eastbound I-94 — Detour: westbound I-94 to Vining Road to eastbound I-94
- Eastbound I-94 to Ecorse Road — Detour: eastbound I-94 to southbound US-24 to Ecorse Road
The Wayne Road and Merriman Road ramps are primary on-ramps for Canton and Plymouth Township residents using the I-275 corridor to reach I-94 eastbound.
Beech Daly Road closes today
Northbound and southbound Beech Daly Road at I-94 closes at 5 a.m. today, Monday, Aug. 3, through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, for bridge demolition. Cross said drivers can use Ecorse Road or Van Born Road to reach Telegraph Road as an alternate route.
Separate from M-39 closure
The I-94 lane shift is unrelated to the M-39/Southfield Freeway right-lane closure near Ford Road that began Wednesday, July 29, and runs through Monday, Aug. 10.
Detroit Metropolitan Airport officials warned travelers on Thursday, July 30, to plan for possible delays once the new lane configuration took effect.
The broader Restore 94 project includes work on more than 21 bridges, a new interchange at Ecorse Road, drainage improvements, and lighting upgrades across communities including Romulus, Taylor, and Dearborn. All work is expected to wrap up by 2029.
