Plymouth-Canton students who built a world-championship-winning robot are opening up Kellogg Park for a day of hands-on engineering challenges, and families can show up for free.

Lightning Robotics, the FIRST Robotics Competition team made up of students from Canton, Plymouth, and Salem high schools, hosts its annual Robots in the Park event on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Plymouth, according to a P-CCS announcement. The day includes interactive robotics challenges, engineering activities, and a chance for visitors of all ages to drive the team's competition robots.

The student-run team, known as Team 862, has competed in FIRST Robotics since 1999 and won the FRC World Championship and Festival of Champions in 2017. What started with fewer than 10 members has grown to roughly 130 students and 20 mentors, with sponsors including Jabil, Amazon, Nissan, and Robert Bosch LLC, according to the team's website.

The event doubles as a recruiting tool ahead of the new school year. Lightning Robotics is open to any high school student in the Plymouth-Canton area, and eighth graders can be admitted on a case-by-case basis with team leadership approval. Students do not need to be enrolled in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools to join.
